The architecturally designed Perimeter House by MAKE architecture has been awarded the Kevin Borland Masonry Award at the 2017 Think Brick Awards. The Think Brick Awards remain the richest design awards in Australia and have become a focal point for innovative brick design. For nearly a decade, Think Brick has celebrated architectural brick projects.

Perimeter House in Abbotsford, Victoria, is bound on all edges by a vibrant industrial context of brick factories, businesses and warehouses. This house is poised between two extremes, with the cool tranquillity of the shady poolside inner garden only a building skin away from the growl of the tough industrial streetscape.

With one side of this western edge threshold pushed hard against the street and the other side opening to a centrally located courtyard space, inbuilt pool and fireplace, this strip of building works between the public and the private, while offering places for engagement with the active street edge and places for children to peek out and play.

Adbri Masonry’s Architectural Bricks in Ebony feature throughout the house from new brick walls, recycled brick walls, brick planters, brick fireplaces, a brick swimming pool surround, brick perforated screens and brick textured surfaces. Swooping planes, chunky masses, thick buttressing, paper thinness, lacy transparency and basket weave patterns: it’s all here. But it’s the bricks – regular, solid, dependable bricks – that weld it all together powerfully into its visual oneness.

“One of the main trends we are seeing this year is the use of brick in interiors and residential landscaping. Concrete Bricks are an excellent alternative to other walling materials as the various colour and texture options can add style to any project. Not to mention they’re low-maintenance and fire-resistant”, says Karl Wood – Marketing Manager at Adbri Masonry.

This is the third consecutive year Adbri Masonry has been part of the winning team and presented with the Kevin Borland Masonry Award, following the incredible Hoddle House renovation designed by architects Ilana Freadman and Michael White of Freadman White who won the 2016 prize.

Adbri Masonry also shared three other finalist spots with Room 11 Architects for the Bruce Mackenzie Landscape Award, Baldasso Cortese Architects for the Kevin Borland Masonry Award and Clare Cousins Architects for the Horbury Hunt Residential Award.
